Next Sundays Message

On Sunday we will celebrate Holy Communion and yet it is unlikely that we will ever find our participation, in this wonderful act of worship, meaningful unless we prepare ourselves according to God’s invitation and command. In Sundays message I plan to talk about both the nature and promise of Holy Communion and also identify the three things the Bible invites us to reflect upon and respond to before we eat and drink from the bread and the wine of Our Lord’s table. In preparation you may like to read the relevant verses in 1 Corinthians 11: 27 – 29.

Holy Communion is truly a celebration of everything Christ has done and will do for us therefore let us come together to worship the Lord with the attitude of the Psalmist who said, “I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go to the house of the Lord.”

This Week’s Message

beyond imagination Paul wrote that ‘no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him.’ The place, where God’s plan for us, often breaks down is in our minds. Unbelief and doubt rob us our full potential.

Every great achievement in history begins as a thought, a dream, in someone’s imagination before it becomes a reality. In Sundays study on faith we are going to see how God stretched the imagination of Joshua and in the process he discovered four things about being used mightily by God. If you struggle with doubt come and learn how to banish fear and doubt from your mind.

Next Sunday’s message

plant sprouting As Christians we are called to a life long journey of faith which grows from strength to strength as we yield our selves to God through Jesus Christ.

The Bible says that ‘Without faith it’s impossible to please God” and so the first task of every believer is to grow their faith by strengthening their relationship with Christ.

Over the next few weeks, I’m going to try to challenge, stretch and deepen your faith and as you respond I believe that you will see some very special things happen as your faith grows.

Faith means ‘Expecting the Best’ and this Sunday I plan to look at the story of David and Goliath and learn from David how to expect the best when facing our giants.

Preview to this Sunday’s sermon

Over the last month our theme has been ‘How Jesus Changes Us’ and so far we have focused on three areas; ‘Our identity’ – God gives a new name, ‘Our worth’ – God know us intimately and affirms His love for us, and ‘Our Weaknesses’ – God helps us to defeat persistent temptation. This week the fourth and final message in this series we will look at how God frees us from the emotional paralysis that causes us to feel that life is our of control. We will look at three examples in particular fear, guilt and powerlessness through the eyes of the paralysed man whom Jesus healed.

The first Sunday of the month is usually an occasion for celebrating Holy Communion in St Andrews and what makes this act of worship so special is that it reminds us about the power of  the Cross of Christ. Our struggles with life in the past, present and future are all addressed at the Cross. Jesus paid the penalty for our sins “He was pierced for our past transgressions.” He paid to break the power of sin in the present “He was crushed for our iniquities.” His death brought us peace so that we could be released from the presence of sin forever. This Sunday I plan to preach from Psalm 60 which like so much of the Old Testament contains some very clear images which were fulfilled in Christ. Come and take your place at the Lord’s table with your brothers and sisters in Christ.

See you on Sunday!

Sermon Theme for coming weeks – How God changes us for the better

butterfly

My overall theme in this month’s sermon series is ‘How God changes us for the better."

Last week we looked at the life of Jacob and this week I want to talk about a rather ignominious character from the New Testament, Zacchaeus. Most of us learned about what Zacchaeus did in Sunday School. He climbed a Sycamore tree to see Jesus over the heads of the crowd. My interest is what was going on inside Zacchaeus that caused Jesus to signal him out for special love and attention. The deepest expression of love is to give another person our undivided attention and because God loves us perfectly we always have His attention.
