Lord we bring before you the fears of the world and pray that rejoicing may be heard this Christmas even in dark places.
Lift the burdens on our hearts, the hurts of the years, and the regrets of wasted lives and all that has been lost, so that hope will still be found in you because of Christmas.
Jesus, you shared our life from your days of vulnerability and dependence as a baby, to your years of youth and responsibility. You chose to save others and to sacrifice yourself. Be with us in our times of feeling small, when pain, sickness or age or circumstance causes our world to close in around us.
Have mercy on children finding their way in world which is not always full of love and in places where joy is seldom found.
Bring protection to the vulnerable, healing to the bruised and beaten, hope to the bullied and love to the rejected.
In our homes and places of work may we find the purpose in life which comes from doing your will so that we do may do our bit in our time to make the world a better place.
Lord Jesus you grew to know the challenges of work, the discovery of purpose, and challenges of living with those who did not understand you.
Help us when we are not understood, and give us grace to better understand one another.
Have mercy on those who look for jobs and who struggle with work they do not believe in.
Bless us in our church life as we seek your way together. May we too see your kingdom come and know your joy.
Bless us in our relationships with people from all walks of life and guide us in learning from you and from those whose struggles are different from our own.
Lord Jesus, thank you for your example in doing the right thing despite the cost. Help us to know what the right thing is when we are not sure.
Help us to see the good in others and pray for your victory in all circumstances. Where we are hurt give us grace to love our enemies and do good to those who persecute us.
We commit to you situations on our hearts and minds: Those who are sick. Children and parents who cause each other pain. Economic systems that need fresh ideas, new faith and the imagination to discern better ways to work for all. Our stewardship of our earthly home. The need for peace and patience in situations of rapid change where hopes turn easily to ashes and new dangers arise. People struggling with natural disasters of earth and sea, of risks to health, food, shelter and life. All who need fresh hope just to carry on. Migrants, refugees, the stateless and all who are lost in body, soul and spirit.
Lord we dare to ask you this Christmas to again give joy to those who sit in darkness, so that shepherds and kings and wise men and simple may find your love.
Help us love life and know when to let it go because our eternal home is with you. May those being born and those dying know your promises. May their lives and ours have the guidance of your presence in all that lies ahead this coming year.
We pray these things in Jesus Name. AMEN.
