Sunday’s Message

This Sunday I plan to continue our series of studies from ‘James’ and I will attempt to tackle the very challenging subject of temptation. Oscar Wild once said ‘I can withstand anything except temptation.’ The only way, we will ever be free of temptation in this life is to give into it and then we will have a much greater problem because there is always a sting in the tail when we do give in. But this is that the end of the matter God has made a way for us to both understand and win in our battle with the devil. James says, “Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial (temptation), because when he is stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love Him.”vs 12. So the stakes are very high, the quality of our life is dependant on us being able to resist temptation. Now all we need to do is learn how to do it and put into practice the lessons James teaches us.

This Weeks Message

crisisDangerOpportunity After two weeks away from the pulpit this Sunday I plan to return, with all the passion and enthusiasm that a preacher should bring to his/her calling, to continue our studies from the letter of James. James introduces his first subject which, is a reminder that our attitude to God and life is determined by our understanding i.e. what we know. For some of us it may be more correct to say, what we need to know as believers. Jesus said ‘My word is true, you will know the truth and the truth will set you free.’  James begins, “Consider it pure joy my brothers when you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of our faith develops perseverance”. vs 2 & 3. This Sunday I plan to talk about what we needs to know about suffering, based on what God knows and on what we need to do.

See you Sunday!

Next Sunday’s Message

There is perhaps no greater frustration in life than sensing that we are here for a purpose, much greater than ourselves, and yet not understanding what that purpose may be. This is why we have been working our way through ‘40 Days of Purpose’ i.e. looking at God’s reasons for giving us life. In our next study we affirm that God created and shaped us not just to be consumers but to make a valuable contribution. Jesus said “Your attitude must be like my own for I did not come to be served but to serve.” (Matt 20:28) One of the things which makes heaven, heavenly is the fact that people have learned to serve each other. On the other hand in our consumer driven world we are not so good at making ourselves available and we often have a ‘do not disturb’ sign written across our face. As a result some things very precious are lost to us including our sense of self worth. We serve God by serving other people and Jesus has given us the perfect example. Come and discover what we can learn from him.

See you Sunday!

Next Sunday’s Message

Our forty day journey with Rick Warren has begun and on Sunday we are going to look at the first of our five life purposes. God created us to love us and our first purpose in life is to return His love. The most important thing we can know in life is that God loves us. The most important thing that we can do in life is love Him back. Jesus was very specific about how we can express our love to God; “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.” (Mark 12:30) Our love should be affectionate, thoughtful and practical and on Sunday we will explore what each of these three things mean for how we can live our lives in a way that honours God.See you Sunday!

Next Sundays Message

On the fourth Sunday of Advent we celebrate God’s love. History is God’s dramatic love story that has been played out since Creation and will be continued until the Consummation of history. Like any great drama the  story can be divided into a number of Acts and Scenes of which the birth of Christ is only one. On Sunday I will attempt to tell ‘The Rest Of The Story’ which is essential if we are to understand the message of Christmas. The Apostle Paul wrote “Long before he laid down the earths foundations, God had us in mind, and settled on us as the focus of his love.” Eph. 1:4 (Mes)Being the focus of anyones love is special being loved by God is truly wonderful which makes Christmas a most joyful occasions.

See you Sunday

A new photo gallery

I migrated the church photos from Flickr to our very own photo gallery.

Why ?

1. Flickr costs money

There is a free option but there are limitations and the long term option costs money

2. Flickr is an external host

That means less flexibility in managing the photos.

Being on flickr also means that there is a wider audience which is not the intention of the church photo gallery. It’s not written, but my intention for the photo gallery is for church members and other visitors to the church website.

3. Cost

When I initially put up the gallery on Yahoo Photos, I did so to save costs. Yahoo Photos was free and offered unlimited storage. Yahoo Photos subsequently closed and offered migration to Flickr which I accepted. As mentioned above, Flickr is not free. The other cost was bandwidth. I had initial fears that members’ enthusiastic viewing of the gallery would use a lot of bandwidth. My fears are unfounded – our current hosting plan has more than sufficient bandwidth, I don’t remember how much but I have never once received warning that the website is consuming too much bandwidth.

The new gallery has almost the same great essential features for a photo sharing site:

1. comments – you can share your comments about the pictures

2. view as slideshow – if you are just browsing for yourself

3. easy upload (not relevant to most, but very relevant to the web administrator)

So head along to photo gallery and check it out.
